Downtown Update

Be Scene

Downtown entertainment options are about to expand starting this Labor Day weekend.  Zeitgeist Arts is set to open the doors to Duluth’s only independent movie house, Zinema 2 on September 7th

“This is just another reason to come Downtown and it adds to our entertainment district,” says Kat Eldred, CEO of Zeitgeist Arts, a philanthropic social venture of the A.H. Zeppa Family Foundation.  “It’s always been part of the mission of the foundation to support regional arts.”

And support regional arts and the community indeed.  Besides retro-fitting two buildings in the 200 block of East Superior Street to accommodate the two screens, the Zeitgeist Arts project also renovated the Teatro Zuccone, a black box theater that is home to Renegade Comedy Theatre as well as host to regional and national theatrical groups. In addition, they will be opening the Zeitgeist Arts Café later this month, offering contemporary American cuisine and a full-bar menu in an artful setting.  The $5 million project is yet another major boost to the Old Downtown neighborhood.

Come Out to Celebrate One of Duluth’s Favorite Attractions

The Duluth Lakewalk Festival is a new event planned for September 11th, 12th and 13th, 2009.  The festival is a free, family-friendly event to explore the Lakewalk and neighboring businesses.  Activities get underway on Friday evening, September 11th with a 9/11 Tribute at Leif Erikson Park and a showing of the ever-popular movie “Iron Will.”

Saturday begins with a 9:30 Morning Reflection at Lake Place Park. From 10am-2pm, enjoy such things as rock-skipping, face-painting, panning for gold, bean-bag tosses, a petting zoo, kayak demos, Kiwanis kite flying, Harvest Festival and tours of equipment from the Fire Department, Police Department and US Coast Guard. Sunday don’t miss the First Annual “Server Wars” taking place at 3:30pm behind Grandma’s Sports Garden on the Baywalk.  For more detailed information on the weekend’s festivities – Click Here

Season Finale Block Buster Concert…

No doubt about it, in the 20 years since he released his first single, Neal McCoy – the one-of-a-kind country singer and consummate live performer – has enjoyed every minute of his long, successful career. Even with 11 albums, over 25 charted singles and countless thousands of touring miles already under his big belt buckle, the Longview, Texas-based artist has no intention of slowing down.  Join us for this high energy show Thursday, September 3rd from 6 – 9 P.M. on Superior Street in front of Fond du Luth Casino.

(Superior Street will be blocked off between 1st and 2nd Avenue East starting at 9:00am to accommodate stage set-up)

Join us for breakfast…

Nathan Bentley will be our featured speaker at the next Downtown Perk quarterly breakfast meeting on September 22nd.  There’s a lot of excitement brewing around the Bentleyville Tour of Lights coming to Bayfront Park this holiday season.  With this move, an estimated 250,000 people are expected to converge on Duluth’s Downtown Waterfront to take in the massive lighting display.

Join the GDC Team at Bentleyville

The Greater Downtown Council is assembling a team of volunteers to assist with the first weekend of set-up for the Bentleyville Tour of Lights.  Decorations and displays will be moved to Bayfront Park in October.  We would like our downtown members to help lend a hand and show support by joining us on Saturday October 3rd or Sunday October 4th between the hours of 8:00am-4:00pm. Let’s give them a hand!  RSVP to kjohnson@downtownduluth.com

The early bird…

It’s September and not too soon for you and your business to be planning for the upcoming Holiday Season.  The Greater Downtown Council is again pleased to be presenting a Window display contest along with other programs, decorations and marketing that will spotlight the downtown business district.  With the inclusion of Bentleyville this year many more visitors are expected in the downtown; this is our opportunity to show how the Downtown can shine. While we have an action plan created, we’re still open for ideas and suggestions until September 16th. Please contact Darlene Marshall, 740-3747 or dmarshall@downtownduluth.com.
