Downtown Update
FREE Evening
Parking for the Holidays
It’s official. The City of Duluth and many private ramp owners have
teamed up to provide free evening parking Downtown during the Bentleyville
Tour of Lights. Starting November 27th, you can also park
for free at any meter after 5:30pm. The action was prompted by a
request from the Greater Downtown Council.
Also keep in mind, meter enforcement does not occur at all in Canal Park during the winter months.
Volunteer at Bentleyville
Let’s show the support from our businesses and
employees in the Downtown Waterfront. Once the light switch is
flipped at Bentleyville, there are plenty of opportunities to lend a hand
to make the event a success. Go to www.bentleyvilleusa.org to fill
out a volunteer application and check the schedule. Whether it’s
serving cookies, tending fires or dressing up in a reindeer costume, there
is something for everyone.
A New Tool for Tackling “Quality
of Life” Crimes
The City of Duluth
has received a two-year federal grant that is expected to have a positive
impact on our Downtown. The Police Department and City Attorney’s
Office partnered up for the grant which will allow them to hire a Community
Police Officer, Community Prosecutor and Data Analyst. The positions
will focus on quality of life crimes in the Downtown and Central
Hillside starting January 1st. This
should be a great tool for taking on such issues as panhandling, drinking
in public, graffiti and other disturbances that affect our business
district.
Zeitgeist Arts Celebrates Grand Opening
With digital marquees out front,
performance theater in back, and contemporary dining that would rival
either coast, Zeitgeist Arts welcomes the community to a Grand Opening
Celebration on Thursday,
November 12th at the 222 East Superior Street home of the
Teatro Zuccone, Zinema 2 and Zeitgeist Arts Cafe. The celebration begins
with a 4 PM ribbon cutting followed by a reception featuring music by
Tangier 57 until 7 PM. As part of the Grand Opening festivities,
there will be two performances by Duluth-based indie band Low at 7 and 9 PM. (These performances
are free but limited space requires that patrons pick up a ticket at one of
the Zeitgeist Arts venues prior to the celebration – tickets will be
distributed on a first come first serve basis). A grand prize as well
as other door prizes will be given away at the Grand Opening which is free
and open to the public.
